Cossacks Jzef Brandt Painter
Józef Brandt (1841 in Szczebrzeszyn – 1915 in Radom) was a Polish painter that excelled in painting horses and battle scenes. Brandt held a polish noble title and owned a manor that he used as an informal art school 100 km south of Warzaw.
Brandt is especially known for his Cossack paintings, this warrior group from the steppes of what is today Ukraine and who were used by the Russian generals to harass Napoleon during his ill-fated campaign in Russia.
The Cossacks used small and ugly horses that needed little fodder and could eat whatever was available in the vast forests in what is today Belarus where Napoleon used large horses that needed proper fodder which was not available and heavy wagons that sank into the mud roads.
But the Cossacks also had larger, beautiful animals, of course and treasured them.
Brandt shows the Cossacks mostly in the role of scouts, either in their own semi-independent territory or as auxiliaries in the wars against the Swedes, Napoleon and the Ottomans.
We hope the reader will enjoy our selection of works by Józef Brandt.
