Anthologie en cinq volumes des contes et nouvelles de cet auteur Ces nouvelles sont caractéristiques de la période morale chrétienne de Tolstoï qui commence avant 1880. La radicalité des choix faits par Tolstoï est vraiment impressionnante. Il faut lire ces nouvelles pour mesurer cette radicalité. C'est ahurissant, et cela en devient drôle parfois tant c'est excessif. Il faut noter que la Russie toute entière est alors travaillée par diverses radicalités. Ainsi le tsar Alexandre II est tué dans un attentat en 1881. Et nous savons aujourd'hui que des révolutions se préparaient.

His novels and outspoken social polemics brought him world-wide fame.
