About the Author

Prof Mohamed Abdel Baky Fahmy, MD, FRCS, Professor of Pediatric Surgery, Al Azher University, Cairo, Egypt. He graduated from Al Azher University and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and trained in the field of pediatric surgery at Egypt and Manchester, UK.

He is the founder and chief of the pediatric surgery departments at Al Galae maternity and children’s hospital and Al Zahrae University hospital and faculty of medicine for girls, Al Azher University, Cairo.

He has a wide experience for more than 30 years in the field of pediatric surgery with a special interest in pediatric urology, rare genitourinary anomalies, pediatric gynaecology, and Hirschsprung’s disease. He is a member of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons since June 1994 and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), Global Rare Disease Registry (GRDR), and the American Association of Academic Surgery. He was the secretary general of the Egyptian Pediatric Surgical Association “EPSA.”

He is an Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Pediatric Diseases, PiscoMed Publishing Ltd, and co-editor for many international journals: Advances in Bioscience and Clinical Medicine, Annals of Pediatric Surgery, Medical Journal of Case report (Bio Med), Medicine Journal and World Journal of Paediatrics.

He has a wide range of international publications, and he is an innovator of operations and procedures in pediatric surgery and pediatric urology, with a special emphasis on his technique for continent urinary diversion for children with failed repair for bladder exstrophy, which was published in the International Journal of Surgery (2007) and republished recently in the Journal of pediatric urology (2015).

He is the author of a recently published Illustrative textbook “Rare Congenital Genitourinary Anomalies”, Springer, 2015.

Description: This is essentially an atlas of known anomalies of the penis. Broken down anatomically, from prepuce backward along the urethra, it is a compendium of the author's 30 years working in pediatric surgery, apparently with an emphasis on urology.
Purpose: The purpose is to "provide comprehensive but concise data for almost all congenital disease and anomalies affecting the penis...." Based on the excellent photographs and extensive compilation, the goal is clearly achieved, especially in one easy to hold and read book.
Audience: The book is simple, direct, and well laid out. It will be understandable to all, from medical students to pediatric surgeons well versed in the subject. Brevity and completeness in a single book are its major helpful features. Dr. Fahmy is based in Cairo at the Al-Azhar University and trained in pediatric surgery at Manchester, probably under Adrian Bianchi, who provides a foreword. He indicates the material has been collected over 30 years in practice and is supplemented by colleagues interested in similar problems from various countries.
Features: An interesting part I includes three chapters on embryology, anatomy, and the penis in history. Parts II to VI are grouped by anatomy, beginning with the prepuce and progressing upward, along the penile shaft toward the bladder and abdominal wall. Whenever possible, Dr. Fahmy uses the same template for each chapter — defining the lesion, historical background, classification and incidence, diagnosis and management. The strength of all chapters lies in the copious color photographs, well produced, to illustrate each lesion. The weakness of the book is that management is often covered in a brief statement without illustration or diagram. It would appear that Dr. Fahmy relies on consultation with other sources to realize reconstruction for most of these problems.
Assessment: To reiterate: this is an atlas or picture book of all things strange and unusual about the development of the penis. It is extensive and copiously illustrated with high-quality photographs. In short, it is a good source of identification and classification, but other sources will be required to fully understand what is available for reconstruction.
