Description: The book is indeed a "concise" look at the field of neurology, covering in 357 pages the whole subject. Disorders and syndromes are covered with important information highlighted in brief sentences. The first edition was published in 2011 and the authors were quick to identify that a second edition was needed. The book categorizes disorders by system (behavioral, neuromuscular, etc.) and each page is packed with facts, figures, and algorithms.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize neurology in an efficient and concise manner. The book definitely meets this objective. In scarcely under four pages, the authors provide a granular review of the field. The book can serve as a quick review manual for clinicians and an asset to busy residents, but it may be too detailed for medical students.
Audience: This book is intended as a practical guide for experienced neurologists and an introduction for learners. Experienced practitioners will find this a useful book to quickly update knowledge, while residents will learn the basics of several conditions rapidly in preparing for exams. Jose Biller is a well-regarded author and renowned clinician educator, while Alberto Espay is well known in the field of movement disorders.
Features: This book provides a broad overview of neurology, examining almost all subspecialty areas. Each page is loaded with high yield information, making the book something one would read only for brief periods of time given the sheer volume of information and the brevity with which it is presented.
