Description: This is a concise review of CT of the coronary arteries, from basic principles of scanning, through post-processing, to image interpretation. This is a needed second edition as many important technological advances have developed since the first edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: The stated goal is to provide "a concise, quick reference for understanding and interpreting CT coronary images." This is an important new area of diagnostic imaging, practiced by both radiologists and cardiologists. Since cardiac CT is rapidly changing with new technology, an up-to-date overview is critical for practicing physicians to understand the latest technique. The authors meet their goal extremely well.
Audience: The book is written for radiologists and cardiologists practicing cardiac CT examinations. The field involves an overlap between the two specialties and the book is well written for both groups so that those in both specialties should easily learn the material more specific to the other.
Features: The basic principles of image acquisition and post-processing are explained very well and beautifully illustrated with many high quality images and diagrams. This may be the best explanation of the technique that I have read. The next several chapters focus on coronary atherosclerosis and evaluation of coronary plaque and stenosis. The images are superb; each figure is typically a composite of a volume rendered view of the heart, a catheter angiogram, and corresponding views from the cardiac CT. Radiologists and cardiologists will benefit from the correlation of the two modalities. The book provides a good review of the scientific literature concerning diagnostic performance and accuracy, up to date with data from 64-slice scanners. Sample report forms and appropriateness criteria are also covered. The next several chapters describe more specialized material, including coronary anomalies, stents, and bypass grafts. Clinical applications such as evaluation of chest pain in the emergency department are reviewed. Left ventricular function evaluation and pulmonary venous mapping are briefly discussed in the concluding chapters. Throughout the book, summary tables provide concise reviews of the material.
Assessment: This is a superb overview of cardiac CT. The explanation of basic principles is outstanding and is aided by many diagrams depicting image acquisition. In the clinical chapters, I particularly enjoyed the correlative images showing coronary stenotic lesions. This is a valuable addition for practitioners in the field. The second edition was necessary to update the advance from 16- to 64-slice scanners and improvement in post-processing software.
