Overview

Highlighted by Gus Cannon's signature "Walk Right In" -- popularized in the early 1960s by The Rooftop Singers -- the second volume in Document's series is a jumble of prime recordings by Cannon and longtime partner Noah Lewis, collecting both solo sides and various group outings. The first tracks come from the Beale Street Boys, a duo comprising Cannon and vocalist/banjoist Hosea Woods, and are followed by a handful of solo harmonica recordings by Lewis; despite their extracurricular activities, by the time all three come together as Cannon's Jug Stompers they're in peak form, shifting easily from the ribald "Tired Chicken" to the plaintive "Going to Germany." With an ad hoc jug band including guitarist Sleepy John Estes and mandolinist Yank Rachell, Lewis then headlines four more sides before rejoining Cannon for one final session which brought their recording career together to a close. ~ Jason Ankeny
