Purpose: The purpose is to provide practice guidelines specifically for pain management in critically ill and injured patients. These objectives are worthy, timely, and necessary.
Audience: The book was written for nurses at professional and advanced levels.
Features: The book begins with a recapitulation of pain management theory and practice, including traditional and complementary medicine approaches. It then covers specific problems nurses face when managing patients with pain in critical care units and emergency departments. Complications secondary to opioid, nonopioid, NSAID, and combination therapies are reviewed. I particularly like the way the book deals with medications, treatments, and other modalities, not just the patient.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for nurses practicing in critical care units, emergency departments, and trauma units, as well as for midlevel providers who manage these patients.
