Description: This is a textbook for graduate students in community nutrition.
Purpose: This book is distinct because it presents nutritional concepts within an epidemiological framework. A stated secondary purpose is to foster scientific research among community nutritionists.
Audience: It is written at a level appropriate for first-year graduate students in the field of community nutrition; it lacks the depth required by more advanced students.
Features: The book is well illustrated and includes numerous graphs, tables, and appendixes that expand on the body of the text. It also includes a moderately complete index and detailed tables of contents at the beginning of each of the three major sections. Two nice features are the listing of Healthy People 2000 goals in each chapter and the overviews of pertinent past and current research studies and available funding sources. The inclusion of an entire chapter on food-borne illness is discordant with the primary focus on nutrition-related chronic disease. Also perplexing is the inclusion of minority populations with vegetarianism, hunger, and AIDS in a chapter on "special groups."
Assessment: Teaching community nutrition within the context of epidemiology is an excellent approach for graduate students that promises to introduce more rigor to this academic field. This book, however, attempts to cover too many aspects of both nutrition and epidemiology. It provides insufficient depth for the understanding of basic epidemiological principles and statistics, as well as of the physiologic and biochemical aspects of nutrition. Advanced students would be better served by more in-depth examination of either issues of primary prevention of nutritional problems or of secondary and tertiary prevention. The book, however, will be good for an introductory survey course of community nutrition.
