About the Author

Rebecca B. Rubin is Professor of Communication Studies and Director of the Communication Research Center at Kent State University. In addition to developing the Communication Competency Assessment Instrument and editing the volume, Improving Speaking and Listening Skills, she has published two textbooks and more than 40 articles in a number of professional journals. Professor Rubin is on the Editorial Boards of a number of professional journals and has served as a consultant to state and federal agencies in the area of competence assessment.

Philip Palmgreen, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Kentucky. Well known for his work in mass media use and consumption, with particular attention to media drug abuse prevention messages, he is co-principal investigator on a project funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse examining the targeting of televised anti-drug public service announcements to at-risk groups. The author of over 60 research articles, papers, and book chapters, he has served as a reviewer for the most major communication journals.
