CHAPTER 1

THE POWER IN GOD'S WORD

"So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord." (Deuteronomy 8:3)


Unlock your God-given potentials

Apostle Paul describes the scriptures as given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that you may be complete thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God created you to serve and honour Him and to have dominion over every other thing He created. He did not leave you to assume what He wants you to do to achieve His plans for you. His word—given by inspiration, is the manual; every believer must be thirsty for it. Dr. Aaron D. Lewis wrote the foreword in Bishop E. Bernard Jordan's book titled "The Laws of Thinking" and explained the correlation between reverencing God and loving knowledge. This was his explanation:

"There is a direct correlation between reverencing God and loving knowledge. One cannot truly love God without also loving knowledge. The Creator is Knowledge, and He does not wish His creation to be ignorant. Despite your allegiance to church, family, and community, if you hate knowledge you will not know how to serve God. It is through knowledge that we understand the all sufficiency, all potency, and the omni-scientific mind of Elohim, Creator of heaven and earth."


The will of God is for you to be fruitful in all things (Genesis 1:28); but Satan is always around with his own secret and destructive agenda. Challenges of life are endless, and this would continue until Jesus Christ comes, when the righteous and the unfaithful will be separated for judgement. Nations are facing wars, famine, economic crisis, political upheavals and many more. Individuals and families also face different types of storms, sometimes referred to as "night seasons"—when God's word is the only answer to overcome. Man's management style is full of "trial and error" and this is responsible for the mistakes made by governments and the governed. Most times, people act on the dictates of their flesh instead of first seeking God's plan and acting on it.

I wish I understood, right from my youth, what I now understand about the power in the word of God. Through the scriptures, God in His kindness revealed fully, His will about everything you need to do to achieve success in life. Great men of God painstakingly made these words available in print, and modern technology made it more easily accessible to everyone. All that is required is for you to desire the word and make use of it.


What is the word of God?

Psalm 119:105 describes the word of God as a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. It is an anchor that helps believers to live a purposeful life and to avoid pitfalls associated with human existence. It exposes the plan of God for you, and what God wants you to do in order to achieve them. The word of God is powerful. It is the word that you will speak to problems confronting you and they will vanish; it is the word that you will speak to the dead and they will live; and it is the word that you will speak to the blind and they will see. The word of God inspires; it corrects, and it gives hope. Every area of human existence has a guide in the word of God, but it is through dedicated search and meditation that your inner eyes can be opened to its deep revelations.


Do not be a listener alone

The person who studies or listens to the word of God but does not do what it says is described in James 1:23-24 like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and goes away immediately forgetting what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the word of God and continues to do it will be blessed in what he does (James 1:25). Those that understand and honour God's word always achieve excellence because they are guided by the Holy Spirit. Such people are easily identified and distinguished among others because the grace of God is upon them. They display knowledge and humility in their appearances, actions and utterances.

There is always a distinction between families that study the word of God together and do what it says and those that don't. The first group stays together because the husband, the wife and the children are made aware of their individual responsibilities for the family to remain together. God instructs the husband to love his wife and not to be harsh on her; the wife to submit to her husband and the children to obey their parents in everything (Colossians 3:18-20). Nothing can destabilise a family that honours the counsel of God.

In my early 20s, I had a friend with whom I attended the Jogger's Club. His was a typical example of a unique home. The family was very organised—they had a weekly chart in their living room where their daily activities during the week were listed and respected by all. They usually had a rice meal as their dinner every Sunday afternoon. What surprised me was that the parents and their children ate their rice dinner from the same bowl! I asked why they did that and my friend explained that it was one of his family's ways of showing love for one another as commanded by God. He explained that studying the word of God and following the rules did help them to live a very happy life as a family.


The word is perfect

The word of God is flawless (2 Samuel 22:31); it can be trusted to achieve the purpose for which it is spoken. It has no race, ethnic, or geographical boundaries. It can be spoken by anybody in any language. It is devoid of bias and it has the same effect everywhere it is spoken. God's word is free and available to those who are willing to search, meditate and utilise it. It is the same yesterday, today and forever. A word of God is all you need to be delivered from captivity. When it is spoken, it comes to pass; the sick is healed; the barren conceives; the poor becomes rich and the low in spirit is lifted up. Your role is simply to agree with the word of God, keep the laws and have trust in His ability to fulfil His promises.

When you are deeply rooted in the scriptures, you will be filled with the spirit of discernment. You will understand life better and take the right steps at the right time and do the right things in the right way. You will become successful in whatever you do because you are well nourished in the word.

God emphasised the significance of the word in this way:

"Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates" (Deuteronomy 11:18-20 NIV).


What you don't have you can't give out—the knowledge you don't have you can't transfer to others. It will be easier for you to train your children in a godly manner, and for your household to be strengthened for positive thinking and living if God's word dwells in you. In many families, children follow in the steps of their parents. After I published my first book "One to One with God" my little boy [Michael] started writing Christian scripts and poems. His work was rich in God's instructions and was well accepted by his mates and teachers. A local television station also showed interest in my son's work. In his own little way, he has started sharing with others, his knowledge of the word of God.


It is a blessing to be knowledgeable in the word of God

God describes a person who is knowledgeable in His word as one building a house; he dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock and when the floods arose, the storm beats against that house and could not shake it, for the foundation was solid. God also describes those who heard but did nothing about it like a man who built a house without foundation, against which the storm beats and immediately fell, and the ruin of that house was great (Luke 6:48-49).

The scriptures contain words of life. Those who understand God's ways through its study will not fail because they are filled with instructions that will channel the course of their lives. Many have had the opportunity of reading and listening to God's word several times; some ignored them and remained where they were and some applied them and became fruitful. Jesus used a farmer that went out to plant some seeds to illustrate this. As the farmer scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock; the seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow but the plants soon withered under the hot sun, and since they didn't have deep roots, died. Other seeds fell among thorns, grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted (Luke 8:5-8).

The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about God and don't understand it; then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts. The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately received it with joy; but since they didn't have deep roots, they didn't last long—they fell away as soon as they had problems or were persecuted for believing God's word. The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, and so no fruit is produced. The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God's word and produce multiple harvests (Mark 4:3-20).


God's word is supreme

The sovereignty of God is described in various passages of the Bible, but I find Ephesians 1:21 very enlightening. It says that God is—"far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come." Whatever God says will stand forever; nothing can be added to or subtracted from it now or in the future, except by the Almighty Himself. Laws made by men and sciences have limitations, but the supremacy of God's power over other powers is absolute. The supremacy of His word over every other word is unsurpassable.

God is awesome, and I give Him glory, honour and adoration for the grace I have to understand the power in His word and to serve Him. I began to enjoy greater peace when I surrendered myself for God's service and passionately pursued deeper knowledge of Him.


The word of God prepares you to overcome challenges

I used to worry a lot about challenges of life before I became a Christian, but as I was studying the scriptures one day, I gained spiritual knowledge of the power of God when I came across the book of Matthew 6:31-34 which reads thus:

"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."


I discovered that I am a covenant child of God and I have no business being anxious about the ups and downs of life. Anxiety could lead to more dangerous developments but the word of God says you should be calm and not be anxious so that He can take control of the situation. It is good practice to make efforts but you must remember that it's only God that has the best solution to your problems. Therefore, be still and keep standing on His promises.

Many people want to be far away from challenges of life and want to live long in peace and prosperity. They are happy to read God's promises in the scriptures but often ignore what is required of them in order to overcome difficulties. Only the Master Himself determines who enjoys His promises. He wants you to completely trust in Him with all your heart and not to lean on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Your deep knowledge of Him will prepare you for victory over challenges of life. It is therefore imperative that you are thirsty for the word at all times and at all costs, as it reveals all that is needed to be done to pass the moral test that might be set before you by way of challenges.


Why do people fail?

Many are the desires in the heart of men—they want to be successful in everything they lay their hands upon and they want to enjoy life to the fullest. Why do people still fail in these things? The Bible gives the reason as lack of knowledge. Many are ignorant of, or deliberately ignore the fact that it is only those who are knowledgeable in the word of God that would survive this world—I mean a world full of deceit and uncertainties. If you delight yourself in the Lord, you cannot fail because God promises that He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). You therefore need to search, understand, and apply the word of God in your daily endeavours in order to be insured against everything that could stand between you and His promises.

Not every word that you hear is God's word, but as you prayerfully search and meditate on the scriptures, you will share fellowship with the Master Himself. Doing that will give you the opportunity to read God's mind and you will be exposed to the hidden facts about His plans for you. God will ensure that you do not take wrong steps in your life endeavours; He will teach you how to face challenges of life without being anxious; He will save you from false teachings, and He will reassure you of His sovereignty.

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians wrote:

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9 NIV).


The scriptures teach you how to channel your thoughts and deeds in the way of the Lord. Satan sometimes uses his tricks to make you believe that certain evils are good. It is quite easy to fall into his trap and fail, if you are not well rooted in the word of God. You must first of all recognise and identify what is good and what is evil, and practice only the good deeds. But how can you recognise and keep away from evil? It is through a deep knowledge of the word of God. Don't wait until it is too late for you; start reading the scriptures today and you will be armed with the spiritual weapons needed to live a peaceful, honourable and victorious life.


A spiritual weapon

Ephesians 6:13 says "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." Praying is the same as warring in the spirit. The weapon for warfare is not physical but spiritual. The battle of life cannot be won when you depend on flesh. You therefore need to arm yourself with the defensive covering of God which can only be found in His word. As soon as you do that, you are no more an ordinary citizen but a soldier of Christ. You will not worry about the challenges of life because God will obtain victory for you. He will satisfy you with long life and show you His salvation. One other benefit of enlisting in God's army through your knowledge and application of the word is the right to demand for whatever you want from Him. If you ask anything in Jesus' name He will do it (John 14:14).


Build up your confidence

One with God is in majority. David had confidence in God's power; he had spiritual knowledge of whom he served. The world, [represented by Saul] told David he was too little to defeat Goliath but at the end he was victorious because he had the winning weapon (1 Samuel 17:45-49). David knew, trusted, and applied the word of God that gave him victory over the enemy. David wasn't a member of the world army that used guns; he was a soldier of God that used the word against satanic forces. Build up your strength and confidence around the word of God and the enemies that come before you will fall flat. My wife used to have fearful dreams some years ago. She saw dangerous animals, fought with masquerades and ate different kinds of foods in her dreams. Initially she ignored the dreams but it got to a point that she got worried and brought it to my attention. I knew and told her that the dreams had satanic connections, but that God had given her authority to overcome all the powers of the enemy; nothing shall harm her (Luke 10:19). We organised a three-day night vigil and prayed with words and promises from the books of Psalms. The Holy Spirit took over the battle, and to the glory of God the evil dreams stopped and the enemies were defeated.
