Overview

The third edition of this book has been comprehensively rewritten and rearranged. In addition to the bone and joint diseases described in the two earlier editions, it now encompasses hitherto unpublished novel applications of pinhole scanning to the diagnosis of a broader spectrum of skeletal disorders. The book has been considerably expanded to discuss five new themes and is complemented by the addition of some 90 recently acquired cases.

This is the second edition of a book first published in 1994 on applications of pinhole skeletal scintigraphy with an emphasis on radiographic correlation. The purpose is to systematically describe the pinhole scintigraphic manifestations of bone and joint diseases. This is a valuable book as there is little attention paid to pinhole scintigraphy in other textbooks. The objectives are met in all respects. It is written for radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians and it would be suitable for both residents and practitioners. The author has tremendous practical experience, and is a leading authority in his area. This comprehensive overview of pinhole skeletal scintigraphy has 17 chapters, including an appendix on technical factors. The range of coverage is impressive, ranging from all basic topics to chapters on otorhinological bone diseases and soft tissue rheumatism syndromes. The book is notable for two reasons. First, the focus is almost entirely on pinhole scintigraphy. Second, there is a radiographic correlation for almost all the scintigrams. The author's thesis throughout the book is that the higher resolution of pinhole scintigraphy reveals findings not seen on standard spot scintigraphy, resulting in more accurate diagnoses. This thesis is amply supported with the high quality pinhole scintigrams in this book. Compared to the first edition, this edition includes coverage of dual-head and SPECT pinhole scintigraphy as well as many new clinical topics such as bone graft assessment. Pinhole scintigraphy is not often done in many institutions, likely due to perceived time constraints. For practitioners who do little pinhole scintigraphy, this book will be less useful asmany the findings the author demonstrates on pinhole scintigraphy will likely not be well visualized on spot scintigraphy (of course, this is the author's point). This is a book of the highest quality, albeit for a currently limited audience. It is an essential book for any practitioner who regularly interprets pinhole scintigraphy and a strong argument for routine clinical use of pinhole scintigraphy for those do not.
