In the 19th century the Jewish philosopher Hermann Cohen and the Christian philosopher Ernst Troeltsch each proposed a reconstruction of their respective religious traditions as ethical monotheism. Deitrich examines their proposals and their correlative ethical monotheistic theories of culture and society. He contends that their ideas have been subject to misinterpretation and stereotyping, and deserve to be studied with renewed interest.
