About the Author

Lieven Lagae is Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Leuven, Belgium (KUL), Head of the Paediatric Neurology Department of the KUL University Hospitals, and Director of the Childhood Epilepsy Program at the KUL University Hospitals. He is the current President of the European Pediatric Neurology Society and serves as an elected Board Member of the International Child Neurology Association (ICNA). From 2004 to 2015 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology. His research interests include translational research in zebrafish models of epilepsy, new antiepileptic drugs for childhood epilepsy, brain stimulation and preventive treatment of epilepsy in tuberous sclerosis.

Description: Challenges in attention, behavior, learning, and sleep have always added to the burden of care of patients with seizure disorders, but until recently few pediatric epileptologists have emphasized these neuropsychiatric issues in addition to counting seizures or perhaps considering possible adverse effects of medication. This small book is a healthy antidote with general discussions of cognitive and behavioral problems associated with epilepsy, chronic problems caused by chronic use of medication, and the relationship of these important comorbidities in specific epilepsy syndromes.
Purpose: It is clear that childhood epilepsy affects learning, behavior, and overall function far beyond the direct consequences of seizures. This book tries to address these other aspects that coexist and contribute to the ultimate outcome, which is hopefully defined by maximal seizure control, minimal side effects, and optimal quality of life.
Audience: This book is intended to assist neurologists in addressing the broad array of developmental and emotional disorders that often coexist with, complicate, and are potentially caused by pediatric epilepsy. It will be most valuable for those already experienced in pediatric epilepsy, but it can be used by trainees in child neurology and others including neuropsychologists and advanced practice nurses. The authors are internationally diverse, representing experts in the field from the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
Features: The first chapter puts into context the challenge of placing intellectual disability and more subtle cognitive disorders with epilepsy when it occurs in the child with a developing nervous system exposed to seizures, medications, and social consequences. There are several useful discussions of the role of technology (EEG and functional imaging) to begin to dissect the anatomic and physiological basis of functional pathology; unfortunately the imaging section is limited to fMRI and does not discuss recent complementary advances in MEG (magnetoencephalography) and TMS (transcutaneous magnetic stimulation). Provocative chapters question the use of "benign" syndromes including infantile disorders, epilepsy with central-temporal spikes, childhood absence, and continuous spike wave in sleep. Other chapters discuss the long-term consequences of neonatal seizures and cognitive and behavioral consequences of epilepsy surgery.
Assessment: This is a slim book, undoubtedly reflective of the fact that these issues, critical to any assessment of quality of life in epilepsy, have not previously been given prominence. Overall, there is a recurrent theme that this is a young field with limited data, but the concerns are critical to understand the pathophysiology of epilepsy and how to best protect the developing nervous system affected by the disruptive forces of epilepsy. There are as many questions as answers in this book, but presumably this is only a first edition that will be expanded in the coming years.
