After earning a degree in textiles from California State University, Long Beach, Cynthia worked for ten years as the owner of a company that specialized in the design and manufacture of sportswear. Inspired by her lifelong love of sun, sand, surf, and seashells, Shaffer (Stash Happy: Appliqué) designed a variety of crafts celebrating all things beach themed. Most of the projects use natural materials that can be found at the waterfront (or at the craft store, if you're landlocked), such as seashells, driftwood, and sand; Shaffer gives useful instructions on methods for cleaning seashells and making your own driftwood. An array of techniques are used, including simple sewing, collage, basic jewelry making, painting, stamping, and macramé. The directions are thorough and the styling is pleasingly beachy. Cute nautical motifs and oceanic blues and greens feature prominently, and many of the activities are suitable for children with some adult assistance. If beach-house style isn't your cup of tea, substitutions of stamps, paper, color palettes, or motifs could result in something entirely different. VERDICT Crafters looking for beach- and nautical-themed crafts to enhance their decor will find plenty of ideas here.
