Description: This is the eighth edition of the neonatal handbook considered the "Harvard Handbook," although several of the contributors and two of the editors have moved to other institutions. This is one of two go-to handbooks recommended to residents and neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPS) working in the NICU. Website resources are included with this edition and are easy to access. The last edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The book describes "current and practical approaches" to the management of neonatal conditions. It is aimed at caretakers working in the NICU who also may be consulted for high-risk deliveries and resuscitation and to evaluate babies in the newborn nursery. The online format adds additional value with links to PubMed abstracts of the references. The writing is concise and practical with little pathophysiology or biology explanations. As a resource handbook, the book meets the objectives.
Audience: The book is aimed at caregivers in the NICU as a rapid and easily accessed resource when evaluating and treating sick newborns. Residents and NNPS looking for quick and easily understood guidance will find this quite helpful. The editors are all well-known neonatologists and educators. Many of the contributors are from Harvard-associated hospitals or Texas Children's Hospital.
Features: Now over 1,000 pages, the book can barely fit in a lab coat pocket, so it is more of a softcover textbook, but it uses an outline format and the writing is concise. Divided into 18 sections comprising 70 chapters, it reviews the entire gamut of care in an NICU, from disease processes to the neonatal environment and support of the family. There are few illustrations and tables and the fonts are small in order to accommodate a tremendous amount of information in a reasonably sized book. New to this edition are key points at the beginning of each chapter and a new section on endocrinology. The best aspect of this book is the vast amount of current information gathered in one place.
Assessment: This is a superb handbook of neonatology, written by experts and easy to read. Its main competitor is a similar book, Neonatology: Management, Procedures, On-Call Problems, Diseases, and Drugs, 7th edition, Gomella et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2013), often called the "Hopkins Handbook," which is about the same size and scope. Caregivers usually choose one of these two handy references to help them during their care of sick NICU patients. The Gomella has more illustrations and a section of "On Call Problems," which some residents find very helpful. One or both of these handbooks should be readily available in every NICU.
