About the Author

Dr. Joseph Sadek is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University and the Atlantic Canada Director for Canadian ADHD Resource alliance (CADDRA). He completed his psychiatry residency training at Dalhousie University and his psychopharmacology training at Harvard University. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Sadek also holds a pharmacy degree (BSc Pharm) and an MBA from St. Mary's University in Halifax. Dr. Sadek is the head of the Neurosciences professional competency unit at Dalhousie University and the chair of the suicide task force for the Capital health District Authority and the IWK hospital. He started the first public adult ADHD clinic in Nova Scotia and is the Clinical and academic leader of the Mayflower Unit at The Nova Scotia Hospital. He is heavily involved in both the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has several peer reviewed articles. Dr. Sadek was a member of the CDHA research ethics board from 2002 to 2010, Dalhousei University Senate and he is currently the chair of the investigation committee for the Capital District health Authority. Dr. Sadek received 2 quality awards in 2012.

Description: Adult psychiatrists frequently feel underprepared to treat ADHD. Especially challenging is distinguishing it from other psychiatric conditions. And when diagnosed, its management is often complicated by the presence of comorbidities. This book provides a welcome and useful tool for clinicians, presenting a series of case studies of patients with ADHD and its most common comorbidities, including substance use disorders, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. One particularly interesting case pays special attention to the link between ADHD and obesity. The book guides readers through taking a comprehensive psychiatric history, including gathering a substantive ADHD review of systems and obtaining collateral information, helps them generate a broad differential diagnosis, and leads them toward an impression and plan. In addition, it provides for each case study a succinct literature review of relevant etiology, epidemiology, and management strategies.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a clear and concise approach to this complex disorder and to use a case-based approach to explain how to diagnose and manage ADHD in the presence of comorbid disorders.
Audience: The intended audience is clinicians who treat patients with ADHD. The book would be especially useful to psychiatry residents or to those who have limited experience in treating these patients.
Features: Each of the seven chapters follows a similar format. The first half presents a case study of a patient who has ADHD, another diagnosis often confused with ADHD, or ADHD along with another diagnosis. The second half of each chapter comprises a literature review pertinent to the case study, often including information on the etiological, epidemiological, and treatment relationship between ADHD and the patient's comorbid diagnoses. Diagnoses and conditions discussed in the book include borderline personality disorder, malingering, obesity, suicidal states, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and bipolar disorder. Appendixes include ADHD checklists, self-report scales, stimulant dosage, and side effect information.
Assessment: This book will be quite useful to clinicians who have limited experience in the diagnosis and management of ADHD and will help improve their skill and confidence, especially in the treatment of ADHD cases that are complicated by comorbidities (which is true of a substantial number of ADHD patients). The book lacks polishing in places and would have benefitted from further proofreading, but, fortunately, this does not detract too much from the ability to absorb and appreciate its content, and it still manages to be a worthwhile contribution to the field.
