About the Author

Prof. (Dr.) Jayashree Sood (MD, FFARCS, PGDHHM, FICA) graduated from BJ Medical College, Pune, India and completed postgraduate training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. She also qualified as an FFARCS in the UK.  She holds a postgraduate degree in Hospital&Health Management (PGDHHM) from Pune, India.  She is currently the chair of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, India. She has published more than 100 papers and has delivered several lectures at various national and international conferences. She received the IMA Mediko Healthcare Excellence Award 2019 for Excellence in Anesthesia Management at Hyderabad, India, as well as the Best Teacher Award 2018 and Best Academician Award from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, India. She is also the CEO of the Indian College of Anaesthesiologists. She has edited the books Anaesthesia In Laparoscopic Surgery and  Anaesthesia For Transplant Surgery and authored an atlas of procedures in neonate and pediatric practice. 

Dr. Shikha Sharma graduated from Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur, India and completed her postgraduate training at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. She also underwent training in lung transplant and thoracic anesthesia at Toronto General Hospital, and the University of Alabama Hospital, Birmingham, USA. She is currently a senior consultant in charge of thoracic anesthesia at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, India, and her team has been involved in more than 2,900 major thoracic cases to date.

Description: This book is specifically designed as a clinical practicum for young anesthesiologists who will be caring for thoracic surgical patients. It is intended to add greater depth and detail in thoracic anesthesia once a broad base of anesthesia knowledge is mastered.
Purpose: This book seeks to respond to the increasing number of patients presenting for thoracic surgery and to the needs of anesthesiologists at non-tertiary care hospitals who may not regularly care for such patients. Such a primer on thoracic anesthesia is clearly needed as the cardiopulmonary pathophysiology and surgical techniques combine to challenge the most skilled anesthesiologist. As a practical reference, the authors and contributors have met their goal to provide a supplement to a broad anesthesiology textbook.
Audience: This monograph is primarily intended for senior residents and fellows entering thoracic specific training and practitioners who will now be challenged by caring for thoracic surgery patients. Such goals for an intermediate text are thoroughly met. The authors, Drs. Sood and Sharma, lead Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Dehli and its thoracic anesthesia section respectively. Dr. Sood has published widely in various anesthesiology topics while Dr. Sharma is a clinical specialist in thoracic anesthesia.
Features: The monograph seeks to balance depth with breadth in its covering thoracic anesthesia. It provides a resource to care for patients regarding typical anatomy and physiology as well as ethics. A secondary focus is the support for the growth of thoracic anesthesiology in India and similar care areas where there is a growing need for specialized care in a population at risk for thoracic surgery due to smoking and environmental hazards. This book could have been better integrated. For instance, there are many sections that briefly mention some aspects of perioperative pain control. These should have been consolidated into the section on enhanced recovery after thoracic surgery where all preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative analgesic modalities are presented and could have been expanded by the reduction in other overlapping chapters.
Assessment: This is a well-written and appropriate supplement to a standard textbook in anesthesiology. It suffers in comparison to Principles and Practice of Anesthesia for Thoracic Surgery, 2nd edition, Slinger et al. (Springer, 2019), which provides similar practical information yet contains greater scientific background. However, Dr. Slinger's text has an overwhelming North American and European focus, so some medical and cultural aspects my not meet the needs intended by authors Drs. Sood and Sharma.
