About the Author

Tommaso Falcone, MD, FRCS(C), FACOG, is Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Chairman of the Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He is Vice Chairman of the Office of Professional Staff Affairs of the Cleveland Clinic. He is co-editor of a textbook, Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery (Elsevier). He is co-author of a laparoscopic surgery atlas (Elsevier) and co-editor of Congenital Mullerian Anomalies (Lippincott). He is also co-author of a patient educational book titled Overcoming Infertility. Dr. Hurd is Professor of Reproductive Biology and the Lilian Hanna Baldwin Chair endowed in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology Infertility at University Hospitals/MacDonald Women's Hospital. For almost two decades, he has been an active clinician and researcher focusing on reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He started his academic career as the Director of the IVF program at the University of Michigan Medical School. He then directed the IVF program and Reproductive Endocrinology Division at Indiana University School of Medicine. Most recently, he was the Chief of OB/GYN and the Assistant Dean for Military Affairs at Write State University School of Medicine in Dayton Ohio. Dr. Hurd came to University Hospitals in 2007 after finishing a 31 year career with the US Air Force Reserve

Description: This fourth edition updates the third edition published in 2017. This book not only provides a detailed overview of reproductive endocrinopathies but also gets into the depths of fertility treatment and dictates surgical techniques. This book differs from other reproductive endocrinology (REI) textbooks in the way it breaks down complex endocrinologic pathways and relates them to common clinical scenarios that generalists as well as specialists could encounter.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to be interpreted not only by experts in the field but also by medical and surgical trainees. These objectives are certainly met through the depth of basic science and up-to-date fertility practices and protocols reviewed.
Audience: This book is intended for anyone providing fertility care to patients, including training residents and fellows, physician assistants, academic or private REIs, as well as researchers in the reproductive field who desire more background on human reproductive practices. This can also be a good resource for general OB-GYN practitioners as many fertility patients start with a generalist approach in their infertility work-up prior to being referred to a specialist. The outline of this book provides a streamlined, organized way for providers to easily find the information they are seeking. Dr. Tommaso Falcone is the Chief of Staff and Chief Academic Officer of Cleveland Clinic London and a recognized expert in the fields of both OB-GYN and reproductive sciences. Dr. William W. Hurd is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist who is currently at the University of Alabama Birmingham and is published in a number of fields including menopause, PCOS, and recurrent pregnancy loss. The multiple contributors mentioned offer a wide range of knowledge and expertise in both gynecologic and endocrinology conditions.
Features: The strengths of this book include its logical organization, starting with basic science of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian function as well as gametogenesis, then proceeding to common clinical disorders that build off the biology. The chapters then progress into infertility and fertility preservation where the work-up and different assisted reproductive techniques are explained and can be better understood after having the knowledge base from the prior chapters. The IVF laboratory sections contain updated research and clinical practices for preimplantation genetic testing. The book ends with chapters going over reproductive surgical techniques, which are more thoroughly covered compared to other REI textbooks. The two new chapters are also necessary and give thorough overviews of the newest advances in the field including uterine transplant and third-party reproduction, which have become increasingly utilized options for families.
Assessment: This fourth edition's ease of use and comprehensive coverage of a difficult and fast-paced field makes it an essential resource for trainees, generalists, and subspecialty providers alike. The addition of the new chapters offers a broader depth of knowledge compared to similar texts of the same subject matter. The addition of the questions at the end of each chapter help to ensure the readers' understanding and retention of the information, which can be difficult in other books such as Yen and Jaffe's Reproductive Endocrinology, 8th Edition, Strauss and Barbieri (Elsevier, 2019), which would serve as a more technical read. As a reproductive endocrinology fellow, this book has become my go-to resource for both quick questions and a deeper understanding of complex subject matter.
