About the Author

Kathy Bonewit-West has been in healthcare education for more than 30 years. She taught anatomy and physiology to Nursing students and later moved into Medical Assisting education. She served as program director for the Medical Assisting program at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, for many years. Ms. Bonewit-West is also a former member of the Curriculum Review Board for the American Association of Medical Assistants. In addition to co-authoring Today’s Medical Assistant: Clinical&Administrative Procedures, Kathy is the lead author of Clinical Procedures for Medical Assistants, soon to be in its 11th Edition.

This text is designed to meet the needs of the medical assistant whose role is expanding by enhancing professional competency in the clinical area. This is the fifth edition since 1979; the most recent edition was published in 1995. The author proposes to expose the student to all areas of competence in a step-by-step procedural format. Supporting theory begins each chapter to help students understand the reasoning behind the skills requirements. With the increasing role of the medical assistant in healthcare, there is a greater need for proficiency in all areas of the medical office. The author has met her objectives with this newest update. The text is written for the medical assisting student but may be used as a refresher for the practicing professional in the clinical field. It is written at an accessible level for this audience. The author is aware of the needs of the medical assisting curriculum and has polished her book through each edition to reflect the changing requirements of the profession. Every area of clinical practice in the medical office is covered with a brief background to introduce standard procedures. The text is written in a straightforward manner with an abundance of visually appealing boxes, tables, graphs, and illustrations. This edition includes boxes contributed by practicing medical assistants to expand on the information in each chapter from a ""real life"" perspective. Web site sources of additional information are included at the conclusion of each chapter. This text compares favorably with others specifically for the clinical practice. The author has updated this valuable text to reflect current medical concerns while retaining the overellexcellence of the previous editions.

This is the fourth edition of a textbook for medical assisting students that provides instruction in the clinical skills performed by medical assistants in the medical office. The organization of the book allows for individualized instruction as well as convenient reference use. The purpose is to advance the knowledge of a medical assistant in the clinical procedures frequently performed in the medical office. The author recognizes the demand for an increasing number and variety of clinical skills required of the medical assistant. The book is intended to thoroughly prepare new medical assistants as well as to renew and expand the skills of the practicing medical assistant. The primary audience is the medical assisting student. The secondary audience may be practicing medical assistants, nursing assistants and aides as well as other students requiring basic clinical procedure knowledge. This new edition is expanded to include additional clinical procedures. Additional information about OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards, CLIA regulations, emergency medical procedures, and other current topics is included. Numerous illustrations accompany the theory section to help the student relate the new knowledge to each skill. Each procedure is presented in a step-by-step format, with underlying principles and illustrations accompanying the techniques. Documentation examples provide the student with a guideline for charting his or her own procedures. This new edition presents information in a clear and concise manner. This is an in-depth study of the most current procedures that must be understood and performed accurately by the medical assistant. The book is easy to read, and theillustrations provide excellent reinforcement of the theory and techniques described.
