Description: This book, an update of Child and Adolescent Neurology, 2nd edition (Blackwell Publishing, 2005), covers broad areas of pediatric neurology.
Purpose: It is intended as an easy to use, logically organized reference for clinicians. By highlighting important aspects of each chapter, it can serve either as a quick overview or a more detailed discussion of important topics in neurology.
Audience: This book should appeal to medical students, nurses, and physicians who care for pediatric patients.
Features: The three parts cover pediatric neurological evaluation, general pediatric neurological diseases and disorders, and common pediatric neurologic problems. Each chapter is written by experts and highlights important points in easy to read tables with suggestions for when to refer a patient to a specialist. Many examples of neuroimaging and pathology as well as images of affected patients support the text. Unfortunately, references are inconsistent, with some chapters lacking a bibliography entirely.
Assessment: While there are many pediatric neurology books, this one is accessible to a wide variety of healthcare professionals. The authors strived to provide a resource somewhere between a voluminous reference and a smaller introductory book, and they have succeeded. In this edition, the authors have updated their chapters with the latest research. In most instances, this change is incremental, not substantial, so it would not typically warrant replacing the second edition.
