Description: This book on neuro-ophthalmology with its digital supplement is intended for comprehensive ophthalmologists and residents in training. This multiauthored contribution more than covers the scope of neuro-ophthalmology practice.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive "go to" book for general ophthalmologists, residents, and fellows in training. The well formatted material is descriptive but brief, which makes it easy to read and understand. It is challenging to provide a book that can be sufficiently descriptive, yet not exhaustive, for it to have mass appeal. This book achieves all of that and more.
Audience: Although the authors have targeted this book at comprehensive ophthalmologists, it is sufficiently detailed that general neurologists and residents and fellows in training in the fields of ophthalmology and neurology will find it appealing. In fact, practicing neuro-ophthalmologists may find this book very handy as an office text. The authors are leaders in the field with vast experience.
Features: The book is well organized into chapters that cover the afferent and efferent aspects of neuro-ophthalmology. In addition there is a separate chapter on perimetry, dyschromatopsia, electrophysiology. Moreover, unique chapters on brain tumors relevant to clinical neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-radiologic imaging, neurology, neurosurgery of the visual pathways, and radiotherapy of tumors of the anterior visual pathways are superbly written and would be exceedingly useful for the practicing neuro-ophthalmologist. The superb quality of the glossy pages, the beautiful illustrations, and the color-coded topics impart a very contemporary look to the book, making it very readable. The organization of the topics and the pearls at the end of every topic provide a useful summary. The DVD is a useful addition, with its video clips that provide compelling demonstration of the subtle elements of the ocular and pupillary movements. A minor shortcoming is that this English language translation of the original German text lacks some fluidity that would have made the book even more readable.
Assessment: Notwithstanding the less than perfect English translation, this book is highly recommended for many readers. This is the best single-volume textbook in neuro-ophthalmology that I have read in recent years and writing this review was a huge pleasure. This book is a valuable addition to the field of ophthalmology, neurology, and neuro-ophthalmology. It is modern, contemporary, and includes several unique chapters not seen in other similar books.
