Purpose: The authors stress the importance of treating sexual dysfunctions that exist universally — with increased rates in patients with psychiatric syndromes — in an environment that finds the field of psychiatry shifting away from treatment of sexual disorders.
Audience: This book is intended for general psychiatrists, but will be helpful for any mental health worker or primary care provider.
Features: The first of the book's three sections sets the groundwork for the remainder by reviewing the clinical aspects of human sexuality with key sections on comorbid medical issues and how to completely evaluate sexual issues. The second section reviews the management of major sexual dysfunctions including paraphilias, premature ejaculation, male erectile disorder, female orgasmic disorder, and others. The final section addresses the proper management of sexual issues in children and adolescents and older adults. Sections include helpful tables, charts, figures, illustrations, case examples, key points at the end of each chapter, and several references for further reading.
Assessment: As a psychiatry resident, I found this book extremely helpful as the authors have successfully consolidated a great deal of information in a single, concise, and clinically oriented text which presents the necessary information and practical tools to better provide treatment of patients with sexual disorders. Before I got this book, I had accumulated a scattering of articles from various other texts and journals that were helpful, but not as complete or concise as this book.
