From the concise overview in Chapter 1 to the more comprehensive, yet accessible, discussions in the following chapters, this book should be on the desk of every psychiatrist working with older adults. I have rarely reviewed or used a book which is so accurately, yet so effortlessly, provides the information I need for prescribing to my patients.

Description: At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, it remains unfortunate for the field of psychiatry that treatments haven't changed much since 2007. Yes, there may be a few new "me-too" drugs on the market, but really no better treatments have emerged for the past several decades. Certainly, there have been advances in the understanding of the dementias — in particular, frontotemporal dementia — but there have been no new treatments. Neither have the principles and practice of geriatric psychopharmacology changed. Although this manual is expertly written and updated, it is unclear to me that the field needs a rehash of the same old stuff.
Purpose: The purpose is ostensibly to provide an update of the field, but since the field of geriatric psychopharmacology has not really had any great leaps forward, certainly since the first edition in 2007, the publisher may have had other motives.
Audience: The target audience is geriatric psychiatrists, geriatricians, and primary care physicians who care for elderly patients.
Features: The book covers the principles and practice of geriatric psychopharmacology, antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, treatment of substance-related disorders, movement disorders, and neurocognitive disorders, and medications to treat pain. Each chapter ends with a useful summary of the pertinent points. The reference section contains timely citations of the relevant scientific literature.
Assessment: Although this is a well-written second edition that candidates for board certification might find useful for studying for the examination, it is not clear to me that a second edition was really necessary.

You will find this one of the finest texts extant on the subspecialty. It is complete, comprehensive, well written, and exceedingly worth the $79.oo price. It will enhance your work and live on your desk as a reference book, and the pages (particularly the charts) will become worn and frayed. You will visit it often and be grateful to the authors.

Worth reading by anyone who intends to teat elderly patients, the text expertly summarized current clinical controversies, recommendations, and options.

Psychiatric times

This is a very useful reference for those treating geriatric patients. Each section contains discussions of each class of medication used in psychiatry and the special considerations for the geriatric population. Other manuals focus on special considerations in diagnosing psychiatric conditions, where this manual goes the next step, focusing on special considerations in medication prescription and on recognizing adverse effects.

Doddy Enterprises

This is a book that has the potential to be helpful to a wide range of clinical who treat psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. But perhaps what is most valuble about this book is the fact that it offers medication management strategies that are based on the authors' experience are wisdom. With some effort and a good library, facts, studies and general knowledge are relatively easy to obtain. However, to be able have the equivalent of immediate supervision from these very experienced clinicians is truly a special contribution to this filed.

The manual is throughout and up-to-date enough to include very constructed book with many useful tables and other supplemental material that accompanies a very readable text. This is a text at a reasonable cost that you will want to keep handy for quick reference to many important topics.
