About the Author

Dr AS El-Radhi MRCPCH, DCH, PhD is a consultant paediatrician who qualified at the Free University of West Berlin, Germany. He has worked in many countries including Germany, Finland, Iraq, Kuwait and England, gaining wide-ranging experience in general paediatrics. While working in Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, Kent, he was in charge of an “enuresis clinic” that received referral of children with UTI, nocturnal enuresis and day-time incontinence, and other urinary problems. He has also been working at the BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital, Orpington, Kent over the past 20 years. Recently he has granted practice privileges at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital, Middlesex. About 20% of his clinical activities there are related to management of children with urinary problems including UTI and bedwetting. Of particular interest has been the subject of fever and fever-related topics.

Dr El-Radhi has sat on several academic task forces and has lectured both nationallyand internationally on his special interests. He has published five books; the last one was entitled “Essential Paediatrics in Primary Care”. He has published over 50 papers in national and international medical journals covering various paediatric aspects mainly on fever-related topics. He is an undergraduate lecturer and examiner of DCH and MRCPCH for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. He is peer-reviewer of several and medical journals. He spent most of his medical career in research performing numerous controlled and multi-centre studies. As he worked for some years in the Middle East, he has long-standing experience in managing febrile children irrespective of the aetiologies.

Description: This is the second edition of a book that provides everything clinicians need to know about fever in children. It is an excellent, comprehensive, clinically relevant book that covers the physiology and pathophysiology of fever, hyperthermia and hypothermia, and temperature control. it includes information about the beneficial effects of fever, the treatment of fever if it becomes a clinical issue, and advice for families and caretakers.
Purpose: The purpose is to cover the entire spectrum of fever in children, based on the basic concepts, diagnosis, and management of the problems of fever in clinical practice, and the available research as summarized by the author in the preface. These are worthy objectives as fever is probably the most common clinical issue in pediatrics. This book definitely meets the objectives.
Audience: The author states that the book is written primarily for junior and senior pediatricians, but he hopes that all practitioners, including nurses, will find it useful.
Features: The book is a comprehensive, well written, and clinically useful resource about all aspects of fever in children. The author and contributors also discuss hyperthermia and hypothermia, as well as the pathophysiology and end organ effects. After reviewing the overall characterization of what fever is and how it is produced, the authors discuss specific clinical conditions associated with fever. They then discuss management of fever and explain the beneficial effects of fever in dealing with infection and inflammation. The information is clearly presented and emphasizes clinically relevant concepts.
Assessment: This is the second edition of an excellent, thoughtful, well written, and clinically relevant book about fever. It is an excellent contribution and a clinically useful resource for providers who care for children with this common issue.
