Description: This is a concise and easy-to-use book on psychopharmacology therapy used for treatment of emotional and behavioral symptoms in children and youths. The nine chapters are divided according to major psychiatric disorders and provide psychopharmacological information as indicated for disorders, rather than individual psychotropic agents as in most pharmacology books. Each chapter includes summaries of research that reflect current practice and comprehensive references for more in-depth information.
Purpose: The book provides practical, evidence-based information on psychopharmacology essential for any healthcare professional involved in the care of mentally ill children. It also shares experiences with newer medications, discusses side effects, and provides practical solutions to some extent.
Audience: Clinicians prescribing medication to children with mental illness are the intended audience, including psychiatrists, pediatricians, family practitioners and social workers. There is no doubt that this book will be a handy resource for child psychiatry fellows and psychiatry, pediatrics, and family medicine residents who have an interest in this area.
Features: Chapters cover epidemiology, guidelines for diagnosis and treatment, FDA indications, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry parameters, and an extensive compilation of available evidence for each individual psychopharmacological agent. Most chapters have tables listing medications with practical information such as duration of action, typical dosage, side effects, drug interactions etc., which can be helpful as a quick guide for residents and fellows. Since the chapters are organized according to disorders, the book is easy to refer to while in clinical practice. On the other hand, since most classes of medications are used in more than one type of disorder, readers will find some repetition. However, the authors have systematically divided the available research evidence on medications for individual disorders, which provides easy and quick reference. Some chapters discuss both published and unpublished articles, which makes it a good resource for clinicians and researchers. Chapters also include information and studies conducted on new atypical antipsychotics, such as paliperidone and other medications used in research, particularly for autism. The chapters on ADHD and autism are very informative, with organized tables of medications and recent evidence. Characteristically, the book provides a brief history of each disorder, recent data on incidence and prevalence, recent practice parameters, FDA-approved medications, rationale for use of indicated medications, and brief accounts of mechanism of actions and encountered side effects. It also discusses major studies relevant to child and adolescent psychiatry. The book could have been improved with more detailed descriptions of mechanisms of action of medications and pharmacological management of side effects.
Assessment: This guide details extensive systematic evidence about psychopharmacological agents used to treat children. The practical approach and concise text make it easy to read. It provides important, necessary information on pharmacological agents for beginners, and up-to-date evidence-based information for the more experienced. However, there is little information on pharmacological approaches for treatment of conditions such as PTSD, and the chapter on anxiety disorders is not as informative and up to date as it could be. Overall, the book does provide adequate information on psychopharmacology for day-to-day practice treating common child psychiatric disorders and is an excellent resource for the evidence to date. Other, more comprehensive books should be consulted for in-depth information, especially on mechanisms of action and neurobiology.

One of the biggest strengths of this book is the thorough discussion of research evidence for the use of various psychotropic medications in youth. Readers will become familiar with some of the landmark trials in child and adolescent psychiatry that led to the FDA approval of several medications. Some clinicians may nd it helpful to share the data with certain patients and their families as they are obtaining informed consent for a particular medication. In addition to discussing the rst-line treatment options for all of the disorders, the authors also include secondline and third-line options that have been used clinically to treat a particular disorder and summarize the evidence for those treatments.

McVoy and Findling's Clinical Manual of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology effectively presents our current evidence base; it is an invaluable resource for physicians and other licensed prescribers who are striving to practice rational psychopharmacology for children and adolescents. It is my go-to resource for developing psychopharmacology handouts for trainees, supplemented by literature reviews of the intervening few years since its creation. It accomplishes providing comprehensive summaries while remaining succinct and easy to read. Although it is not a manual of drug metabolism and how pharmacokinetics affects clinical practice—for that, I strongly recommend Carlat's Drug Metabolism in Psychiatry: A Clinical Guide by Daniel J. Carlat—this book is excellent for understanding the clinical research base for the medications we use in practice.
