Description: The growing number of patients with dementia over the next 10 years will burden our healthcare system and all physicians, especially psychiatrists and neurologists, will have an increasingly important role in the diagnosis and subsequent management of these patients. This new and concise manual, which is essentially an abridged but updated version of the 2009 book by the same authors, The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Alzheimer Disease and Other Dementias, provides practical guidance on the recognition, diagnosis, and management of patients who suffer from dementing disorders. Written and edited by clinician-researchers in the field, it is an excellent addition to the psychiatric and neurological literature.
Purpose: The purpose of this manual is to "serve busy clinicians as a practical tool." The authors note that the original textbook was modified and condensed to "address the immediate needs of the clinician." It has become a typical pattern for American Psychiatric Publishing to extend previously published textbooks in this way.
Audience: The target audience includes psychiatrists and geriatric psychiatrists. Neuropsychiatrists and neurologists also would be interested in this manual.
Features: The first part of the book focuses on diagnosis and includes chapters on neuropsychiatric assessment and diagnosis, neuromedical evaluation, neuropsychological assessment, neuroimaging, Alzheimer disease, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), vascular cognitive impairment, the synucleinopathies, frontal temporal lobe dementias, and traumatic brain injury. The second part covers treatments for neuropsychiatric symptoms, Alzheimer disease and MCI, and caregiver support. Each chapter ends with relevant references and an appendix contains lists of national and state agencies.
Assessment: This is a useful manual for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with dementia. However, if you own the textbook, it would not be worth the $65 to buy this abridged version (with some updates).
