Description: Even though most hospital nurses work in one area, patients come in with comorbidities beyond the scope of specific practice on a particular unit. This is the third edition of a review by system of nursing knowledge and clinical practice intended as a clinical companion or a quick reference for all specialties. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: With nursing and healthcare always changing, clinical guidelines need to be updated every few years. A book like this is much needed, and this particular one is comprehensive, while remaining very readable.
Audience: The intended audience is nursing students, graduate nurses, and those returning to clinical practice. However, this is also a great reference to have on any unit for those hard to remember facts and as a quick reference. I also would encourage faculty to make it available on their clinical rotations for quick reference for student questions.
Features: This book starts with a brief review of anatomy and physiology, as appropriate, followed by assessment of the system, with common tests and pharmacology. It presents the material in bullet format for quick review and uses a consistent format from chapter to chapter. Nice features include the additional critical information on medication administration, documentation, perioperative care, and survival tactics, the review of BLS and ALS on the inside cover and first page, and the icon flags and critical alert boxes. A nice addition would be a chapter on disasters in facilities and outside response.
Assessment: This could become my favorite pocket guide to take to clinical with my students. I can also see recommending it to nurse managers to keep on their units as a quick reference. It can be very useful in specialty areas such as the catheterization lab or GI lab, which see patients who come in for a specific procedure but have all kinds of comorbidities. This update is justified, with the addition of clinical alert boxes for a deteriorating patient and the changing clinical guidelines.
