The 6th edition of a well-known and much used standard text in the field. This book covers all aspects of the biochemical abnormalities caused by various diseases and how they relate to the biochemical changes in the blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, joint fluids, other body fluids and in cells. The purpose is to provide the fundamental bases for understanding the biochemical changes that occur in disease processes and in turn to provide the rationale for applying this understanding to the diagnosis of the disease process. This fifth edition of Kaneko's text includes among its 30 chapters four new chapters addressing lysosome and storage disease, tumor markers, clinical biochemistry in toxicology, and avian clinical biochemistry. The chapter about trace minerals has been eliminated. In recognition of the changes which have occurred in the field of biochemistry since publication of the fourth edition in 1989, there are marked revisions in existing chapters as well as the addition of the four new chapters. Appendixes have also been expanded to include new analyte reference ranges for an ever-increasing variety of species. Significant additions to the appendix include ranges for free fatty acid, fructosamine, and hemoglobin AIC in small animals. The reference ranges for avian analytes are markedly expanded to include the ostrich, peregrine falcon, pigeon, African grey, and Amazon parrot. Goat and llama CSF analyses are now covered, but the laboratory animals are still largely not covered. This book is invaluable to the veterinarian at all levels including students, residents, and practitioners. The editors do not specifically address to whom or for whom the book was written. Each chapter is authored by someone credible in the subject area they are addressing. Illustrations are pertinent and of appropriate quantity. Significant updating of references is evident in all chapters. The table of contents is adequate. The addition of chapters addressing lysosomal storage diseases, toxicologic and avian biochemistry, and tumor cell markers is timely and valuable information. It may be a daunting task to keep up with advances in molecular biology. Within the next few years, dramatic changes in diagnostictesting for infectious, genetic, and oncologic diseases will necessitate a tremendous expansion or revision of this material.
