Description: This book provides clinical updates and an in-depth review of several topics relevant to hospital medicine. There are many useful tables, figures, graphs, and diagrams throughout the book, most of which are printed in color. This is the second edition, last published in 2018.
Purpose: The book's purpose is to review pertinent topics in hospital medicine and provide clinical updates as well as discussion on the intersection of medicine and society. The authors seek to initiate conversation about recent cultural change and how this has impacted society and the practice of medicine. These are very worthy objectives and the book meets those objectives well, making it necessary.
Audience: This book is primarily written for clinicians of general hospital medicine, including residents on adult medicine rotations. Although the book doesn't appear to have been written specifically for students, I do think students will find the information useful and will likely benefit from the discussion on gender, race, and career advancement in the practice of medicine. This book meets the needs of its intended audience and the author is a credible authority due to his current credentials as an internal medicine physician and his prior publications.
Features: The book covers some of the most common topics seen in hospital medicine and the information is very relevant for any inpatient medicine clinician. The authors provide a comprehensive review of the current clinical approaches to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although they acknowledge this information is likely to evolve over time, they still felt it necessary to include a current overview of what we know now as COVID-19 is such an important and relevant topic in hospital medicine today. The information is organized well and includes an appropriate use of color art figures and tables. The book is unique in the way the authors address current cultural and societal issues. The discussions are objective, non-inflammatory, and incorporated well into the text. The book is centered on the current times and relevant to today's clinicians. For example, information on practicing medicine virtually and discussion on current trends in hospital medicine is included.
Assessment: This is a high-quality textbook that is extremely relevant to today's hospital medicine clinician. The book is a great compilation of pertinent clinical topics, including discussions on the current challenges in the practice of medicine as well as the impact of cultural change in society. This updated edition addresses important cultural and societal issues that have come to the forefront of the practice of medicine, and, therefore, justifies replacing the previous edition. The book is uniquely relevant to the current cultural era in its discussion on gender, race, and fair career advancement in medicine. The author acknowledges that these discussions can be uncomfortable and may lead to defensiveness or anger, but sees these conversations as crucial to achieving meaningful change and for healing. The book covers common medical subjects as well as topics that are no t widely included in other textbooks such as information on virtual medicine, sustainability in healthcare practices, physician wellness in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the evolution of value-based care in medicine. Each chapter provides an in-depth review of key topics in medicine today. The material is written in a concise yet profound manner. The information is organized well and easy to read and comprehend, and the appropriate amount of information is included in each chapter without missing any key points. The author acknowledges the flexibility and adaptability of the hospital medicine community throughout the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and recognizes the tremendous effort made by clinicians to deliver essential care to the community in a time of great need. Great importance is placed on implementing sustainable practices for future emergencies that are bound to come. This textbook sets a new standard for all future medical texts by stating that clinical topics cannot be fully addressed without acknowledging the societal issues that greatly impact the practice of medicine.
