Description: A relatively new analytical tool, capillary electrophoresis has the potential for rapid separation of closely related molecules, which can range in size from small inorganics to large proteins and nucleic acids. The high resolving power and capacity for fast throughput offers potential for clinical application.
Purpose: This volume is a review of progress in the field and includes analyses of proteins, steroids, and drugs.
Audience: The audience is technical personnel in hospital clinical laboratories.
Features: Few if any of these procedures have yet been adopted for routine clinical laboratory use, and readers must realize that competing technologies, especially in the macromolecule arena, are likely to have advantages in specificity as well as sensitivity. In addition, analysis of drug metabolites usually involves mass spectrometry, applicable via an interface to capillary electrophoresis but not discussed. Detection limitations are acknowledged but not discussed in detail. Clinical laboratories must utilize procedures that are validated by extensive testing.
Assessment: This book may be considered a set of directions and suggestions for the application of capillary electrophoresis to the analytical laboratory but does not contain a set of approved protocols.
