Cletus: An Historical Novel about Slavery, Freedom, Revenge and Redemption in Civil War Indian Territory
“Mama, I’m leaving right now, running before that damned old Will kills me for sure.”

With that, Cletus casts himself into a new world, one for which he is little prepared to survive. Traversing Civil-War-torn Indian Territory in 1861 would require the skill of a trained scout. But Cletus is ignorant of almost everything except the pampered life he’s enjoyed as a house slave who never breaks a sweat in honest labor. He will face every deviant impulse the devil ever planted in mankind—hatred, deprivation, but—worst of all—torture just for the joy of watching a fellow human suffer pain and humiliation unworthy of a niche in the mind of the sickest imagination granted man.

As a child, Cletus listened to the old black butler tell tales of the fierce creatures of the heavily forested mountains that surround Yazoo West, the plantation owned by Cletus’ master, half white, half Choctaw Indian, Thomas McLeish. With the first step Cletus takes off Yazoo West, he will find himself suddenly surrounded by these critters, alligators, puma, black bears, even wolves that occasionally wander into the forest from the seemingly endless great plains west of Yazoo. He will find ways to do combat with the beasts or he will die.

So Cletus must make a dire decision. Run from Yazoo and pit his pitiful skills against creatures who survive by hunting and killing their prey. Or stay put at Yazoo and wait for Will to kill him. For some reason his mother Siney will not disclose to Cletus, she’s certain Will will carry through on his promise.

Within a week from leaving Yazoo, Cletus finds himself embroiled in events he neither wants nor understands. That so-called Civil War. To make his situation even more hopeless, the Five Civilized Indian Tribes are now choosing sides and turning the Indian Territory into a battleground. So once again, Cletus must choose. Choctaw, Chickasaw for the South. Cherokee, Creek (Muscogee), Seminole for the North.

The runaway girl slave named Sarah, will help him choose. Cletus is much in love with Sarah, and it will take more than a war to separate Cletus from the girl who is carrying his child.
