Overview

What does it really mean when we describe classical riding as an art?

How do we discover artistry in our riding?

This is a story of a rider in search of art. At the end of a lesson in the manège, he decides to ask the teacher for help in finding answers. The teacher suggests that they warm the horses down with a ride out into nature, to give them time to talk together.

As their conversation winds along the old way in the forest, they explore the idea that traditionally in equestrian academies, students would also be taught the classical arts; subjects such as philosophy, fine art and music. Could there be a reason why riders learned these arts?

As the rider delves deeper into the classical arts, he begins to discover that equitation is part of a rich tapestry of ancient wisdom; a wisdom that is intimately interwoven with the deeper laws of nature, the boundlessness of the soul, and the harmony of the heavens.

About the Author

Andrew Moody is a professional classical rider, equestrian coach and author. He trains and teaches with Minette Rice-Edwards at Ham House Stables in London, UK.

In his search for deeper meaning and artistry in his equitation, Andy found himself reconnecting with an academic pathway traditionally taught to riders, but which has now been somewhat lost; the study of the classical arts. He subsequently became an independent scholar and student of the arts, including fine art, early music, ancient philosophy and classical dance. He created Equitation and the Arts in the hope of helping other riders to rediscover how the wisdom of the classical arts can help enrich their own horsemanship. Andy’s life and work is profoundly influenced by his practice of Falun Dafa, a spiritual cultivation discipline which teaches the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance.
