Born at the end of World War One into a prosperous London family, Cicely Saunders struggled at school before gaining entry to Oxford University to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics. As World War Two gained momentum, she quit academic study to train as a nurse, thereby igniting her lifelong interest in caring for others. Following a back injury, she became a medical social worker, and then in her late 30s, qualified as a physician. By now her focus was on a hugely neglected area of modern health services: the care of the dying. When she opened the world's first modern hospice in 1967 a quiet revolution got underway. Education, research, and clinical practice were combined in a model of 'total care' for terminally ill patients and their families that quickly had a massive impact. In Cicely Saunders: A Life and Legacy, David Clark draws on interviews, correspondence, and the publications of Cicely Saunders to tell the remarkable story of how she pursued her goals through the complexity of her personal life, the skepticism of others, and the pervasive influence of her religious faith. When she died in 2005, her legacy was firmly established in the growing field of hospice and palliative care, which had now gained global recognition.

The subject is Cicely Saunders (1918-2005), who is not as known as she deserves to be for her role in the development and institutionalization of palliative care in the U.K. Hers was a life devoted to serving, which best exemplifies the meaning of the medical vocation.
Purpose: Through the biography of Cicely Saunders, the author describes the development of something that today is almost taken for granted, but was not in the aftermath of WWII: a modern medical system of palliative care. This is a fundamental contribution to the discussion of medicine in the 20th century, all the more so because the center-stage character almost disappeared behind her achievement.
Audience: This biography will be useful and instructive for a broad range of audiences, from pre-med students and nurses to families of patients in palliative care, as well as anyone interested in examining the development of medicine in society during the 20th century and reflecting on the current state of the service provided to society. The author closely followed his subject and had access to first-hand documents that result in a vivid, documented, solid narrative that will captivate readers.
Features: From Cicely Saunders' birth to her last years, the book follows, step-by-step, the development of an exceptional, yet not well-known, medical career started relatively late in a life. After difficult years during WWII serving as a nurse, Saunders enrolled in medical school at age 33, in a time when this was not an easy task for a woman. With spiritual guidance, enlightened persistence, and exceptional endurance, Saunders succeeded in fostering the creation of a service of palliative care culminating with the creation of St. Christopher's hospice in 1967. This is the lively story of a life devoted to service more than to medicine, which will be an inspiration for years and generations to come.
Assessment: Biographies of eminent figures in medicine are not rare. Most often, they narrate the success of pioneers, their academic career, and their achievements. This biography is well documented, almost like a journal article, if not a movie. Some black-and-white pictures (too rare and not of the highest quality, unfortunately) allow readers to connect more directly with Saunders in different circumstances of her life, instead of official portraits immortalizing great moments of a career. This is definitely a different biography, the illustration of a life and a cause, based on personal contact with the subject, with her fights, her disappointments, her successes and, also, her post-factum reflection on her life.
