Chrysanthemum Ben
Chrysanthemum Ben.

Prince Takeda is a cousin of Emperor Hirohito of Japan. He is conventionally married with children. He, his fellow cousins and uncles are summoned to the Imperial palace in November 1932 to hear a directive from the Emperor who is heavily under the influence of Nichiren, an ancient dead buddhist monk. They are tasked with expanding the Japanese Empire in order to bring peace to the world.

Takeda is a peaceful man with a love of horses but the Emperor is a god and must be obeyed. Takeda is involved in awful situations such as the rape of Nanking in 1937 and many other atrocities that leave countless dead.

He is tasked with recording and dispatching stolen booty from South East Asian Countries. The Japanese were using fake hospital ships to convey the treasure to Japan. Takeda is on such a ship when it is directed to a naval battle involving a German vessel and the Australian warship HMAS Sydney.

The Encounter with the Sydney is horrible, he is related to a living god, no one onboard the ship dares to engage or disobey him. He is on his own making terrible life and death decisions.

The war develops and the sea lanes between S.E.Asia and Japan are becoming blocked by American submarines. The Japanese resort to stashing their stolen gold in the Philippines in massive cave constructions and pits, all built with slave labour which they entomb at the completion of each site. During this horrendous (true - where do you think Marcos got his millions from?) time Takeda meets the pristine, untainted, naive farm boy Benhameen Valmores and hires him as his valet.

Ben has no comprehension of the war, why it is happening or what Takeda's agenda is. He is a simple young handsome boy with a beautiful smile and a compliant manner.

The war is ending, the Americans are closing in. Takeda defies his generals and leads Ben out of a mountain vault before it is blown entombing thousands of workers including many high ranking Japanese Officers / engineers. Takeda escapes to Japan in a submarine, leaving Ben some gold. along with all the maps. Takeda is tasked with secret negotiations with the Americans after Hiroshima, the Americans want the maps and the gold ( there's a huge amount).Takeda hurries back covertly to the Philippines for the maps but they are lost. The Americans do not believe him and Nagasaki happens prior to Japanese capitulation.

The end of the war brings about many deals between the Americans and the palace. Military Generals and prime ministers are tried for war crimes and executed. The Royal Family are exempt. Takeda is retired to his ranch to breed horses. He never forgets Ben.
