This book offers a comprehensive review of evaluation and treatment of the common problem of chronic pelvic pain in gynecologic and primary care practice. Its purpose is to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the problem, addressing not only neurologic systems, but also the psychosocial aspects of chronic pain syndromes. Its target audience is the practicing obstetrician/gynecologist, but it is a good reference for all those who provide primary care to women. The book is organized both by organ system and by diagnosis, with particular attention to gynecologic etiologies. References are current and complete. There are a number of illustrations, primarily of laparoscopic findings in gynecologic etiologies of chronic pelvic pain. Chronic pelvic pain is a common problem in primary and gynecologic practice, and one which is frustrating not only to the patient and her family, but often to her physician as well. For this reason, this is a useful addition to the library of anyone practicing primary women's health care. I am particularly impressed with the editors' emphasis on the importance of a thorough history, with special emphasis on the psychosocial issues which are crucial in the evaluation of any chronic pain syndrome. As a family physician, I find the broad scope of the text particularly helpful. The presence of numerous typographic and grammatical errors detracted slightly from what is otherwise a very high quality text.
