Description: The authors have developed a concise yet relevant treatise on the topic of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Despite its being yet another treatise on the topic, the book adds significant value to helping both patients and clinicians understand the complexity of the syndrome.
Purpose: The authors intend to help patients afflicted with CFS, as well as those who treat the afflicted, to better understand the syndrome. It is a particularly valuable book from the viewpoint of helping clinicians better understand the patient's experience of the disorder and its biopsychosocial impact.
Audience: The is part of The Experience of Illness series, which aims to provide tools for patients and clinicians. The authors have researched the topic extensively, although any other expertise they may have in this particular subject matter is not well established in the book.
Features: The authors develop the topic well, covering the range of history, current thinking, biomedical research, and the overlap with psychiatric conditions and impact on the patients' lives. The book conveys relevant clinical information interlaced with frequent quotes from CFS patients, helping the experience "come alive" for the reader.
Assessment: Despite being yet another book about a controversial and enigmatic condition, this one adds tremendous value to the field. It conveys the most relevant clinical information interspersed with patient experiences in a format that is clear, concise, and easy to read and understand. It meets its goal of providing education for patients and understanding/empathy for the providers. Well done.
