Choosing Utah
Choosing Utah is a story about immigration. From a developing country such as the Republic of the Philippines to a developed country such as the United States of America, this book is about a single Filipino who describes his own decision-making or thought processes on which specific state in the American continent would he live in. Unlike the most frequently availed family-based petition, the author's unique self-petition in immigrating to the USA is such a rare & unique story. An immigration journey like no other, the personal narrative in this book highlights what led him to choose to live in the State of Utah, which is not a typical choice for many Filipino immigrants.

Choosing Utah is also a story about a self-reliance experiment. An experiment to achieve upward mobility in life without relying from family, friends, and government. From failed plans and prior solo travels to apartment-searching and job-hunting, the author shares what he thinks he pioneered - at least among the people he knows - as a Filipino immigrant. He is not a Mormon but is grateful to be living in a community that is largely dominated by Mormons.

About the Author

Niño served with the U.S. federal government for 20 years. He worked as a Federal Benefits Claims Representative with the Social Security Administration Division office at the American Embassy in Manila, Philippines. When he became eligible for Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), he applied for it, got approved, and finally immigrated to the United States of America on March 15, 2022. He chose the State of Utah as his place of immigration. In this book, he intends to tell his own unique immigration story as a Filipino. A journey which he calls a self-reliance experiment, Niño's intent is narration rather than persuasion.
