Chinese authors examine the evolution of views of the United States amongst different groups in China and the influence of those views on Chinese foreign policy and Sino-American relations in 10 papers presented by McGiffert (a fellow in the International Security Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies) as a complement to his earlier China in the American Political Imagination (2003). Historical reviews of Chinese images of the US are followed by examinations of elite and popular perspectives that look at the views of Chinese government officials, strategic policy makers, media professionals, college students, business executives, and Chinese who have returned from overseas. Also included are two papers by American academics looking at the influence of US images of China and the American self-image on relations between the two nations.
