About the Author

Patricia Speck is an internationally recognized family nurse practitioner who specializes in public health and forensic nursing. She graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Nursing and later completed her doctoral dissertation on sexual assault program evaluation. As a board certified family nurse practitioner, Patricia’s clinical practice focuses on the health aftermath of violence and her research centers on forensic nursing practice topics. She is a consultant, author, and lecturer on forensic nursing and has earned more than 20 local, national, and international awards and professional honors for her work. Patricia chairs the American Public Health Association’s Family Violence Forum and is a former president of the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
Diana Faugno, a Minnesota native, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing-University of North Dakota and a Master of Science in Nursing-University of Phoenix. Ms. Faugno is a Board Director for End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) and a member of the Board of Directors for the California American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She is a retired-fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Science and a distinguished fellow in the International Association of Forensic Nurses. Currently, she is the nurse examiner at the Barbara Sinatra Childrens Center and a nurse examiner for Eisenhower Medical Center’s SART team. Her professional experience includes nursing in the Medical/Surgical, Labor and Delivery, Pediatrics, and Neonatal Intensive Care departments.
Angelia Trujillo is an associate professor of nursing at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, School of Nursing and primary nurse planner for the Continuing Education unit of the Alaska Nurses Association. She received her doctorate of nursing practice in 2008 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center with a concentration in forensic nursing and program evaluation. She has five years of experience as a forensic nurse examiner for adults and adolescents and seven years of experience in pediatric and adolescent response. She has worked on 20 peer-reviewed publications over the course of six years, including the first and second volume of Sexual Assault Across the Lifespan 2E: A comprehensive Clinical Reference. In 2015, she received the award for Education Article of the Year from the Journal of Forensic Nursing.
Christine Hallas is a board certified pediatric nurse practitioner with 20 years’ experience working in pediatrics. Upon completing her bachelor of science in nursing she was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Christine’s nursing career has centered around the care of children in the Pediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Emergency Department, and medical-forensic evaluation of child maltreatment. She advanced through her career earning certification as a SANE-P (sexual assault nurse examiner-pediatrics) and forensic nurse examiner. Christine has been involved in over 1200 medical forensic evaluations, provided peer reviews, and testified in criminal hearings and trials. She has provided trainings to law enforcement and healthcare providers on team response to child maltreatment and the medical forensic exam.
Jennifer Johnson is a board-certified advanced forensic nurse, certified forensic nurse, and sexual assault nurse examiner with more than 20 years’ experience in practice. She currently works as assistant manager of the Forensic Assessment Consultation and Treatment (FACT) Program at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee Mission, Kansas and is the president and owner of Johnson Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC. Jennifer Johnson earned her doctorate of nursing practice from Maryville University in St. Louis and her master of science in nursing from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Jennifer Johnson is an appointed member of a number of professional and governmental organizations related to forensic medicine, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology/National Institute for Justice Evidence Management Project and End Violence Against Women International’s Medical Forensic Expert Panel. She is a regular guest speaker at medical and forensic professional conferences throughout the United States and is frequently called upon to stand as an expert witness in cases of child abuse and sexual assault.
