IN this little Treatise, which the Editor offers with submission to the Public, he has endeavoured, and hopes with some degree of perspicuity, to point out the best method of attaining a knowledge of the agreeable and scientific Game of Chess.
Various have been the opinions of different writers, respecting its origin and antiquity; but none seem more clearly to prove it of Indian invention, than the Account prefixed, written by an ingenious Frenchman*. The Editor has also added a few anecdotes of some distinguished Personages, who were enthusiastic admirers of this amusement; together with the Morals of Chess, written by the late Dr. Franklin, which he hopes will be deemed no improper appendages.

The Analytical Review of August 1796, speaks of this little Work in the following terms of approbation:
"This small Volume appears very properly compiler to answer the purpose of an easy introduction to the knowledge of the Game of Chess. The introductory parts are curious, amusing, and instructive. The principles of the Game are concisely and clearly laid down, and five or six games are described with explanatory remarks; it will be an acceptable manual to those who are fond of this amusing exercise of the judgment."
