Cheerful Yesterdays: Life of an Author, Traveler, Abolitionist, Soldier, Suffragist (Abridged)
Thomas Wentworth Higginson led one of the most active and accomplished lives of the 19th century. An ardent abolitionist well before the American Civil War, when war came he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, from 18621864. He was badly wounded and mustered out.

For the decade before the war, he was one of America's leading supporters of rights for women. He spent the rest of his life fighting for the rights of free African Americans, women, and other disenfranchised groups.

This is Higginson's own story in his words. As an author of note, he was mentor and correspondent to poet Emily Dickinson.

Higginson helped record and preserve Negro spirituals by copying dialect verses and music he heard sung around his regiment's campfires.
