Overview

The Drugstore Cowboys opt for sounds rather than songs most of the time. The result is a rather tedious, tiring listen which starts mildly promising with "Horror Flick' Scene 1: Introduction to Chaos" which is, well, chaotic. From there, the duo try to re-create the electro-clash fad of Fischerspooner with "These Clouds Will Never Catch Us." After about a minute, it falls off the rails by using audio from what sounds like the September 11 terrorist attacks. A moderate improvement is "Penguin Tuxes at the Disco Bar," which brings Trent Reznor to mind. The first number which is adequate comes across during the slow-building "The Elegance of the Dance" as they sing about "songs of the apocalypse." But once again they deliver "Mind of a Sales Man" with a cliche string of emo-like screams. The lone track which is good has to be the moody and passionate "Coyote Confessions" that ebbs and flows with the vocals buried in the thick industrial sound. Another decent ditty is "Only Fire Drives Away the Rats!," which brings to mind an early version of Linkin Park. Unfortunately the rock-rap "Murderpiece Composit" sounds quite dated. ~ Jason MacNeil
