Description: This is a collection of cases in endocrinology presented by clinicians, organized by subject. Each case is presented as a clinical story, and is followed by a brief review of the relevant literature with references.
Purpose: The author intends this book to be read for enjoyment by clinical endocrinologists, and not as a reference. Introducing the pleasure of a good case into the often dry endocrine literature is a worthy goal, and this book meets that goal.
Audience: The author's intended audience is the clinical endocrinologist, including fellows in training, full time clinicians, and even academic once-a-week clinicians wanting to broaden their clinical skills. The limiting factor will be time — busy clinicians often read to find a quick answer, but may not have time to peruse a book for enjoyment. This book is ideal for fellows.
Features: By design, this book includes cases that the authors find interesting and unusual, which leads to a paradoxical repetitiveness. Different authors find the same type of case interesting, which results in duplicate coverage of rare topics. However, a broad range of endocrine subjects are discussed, complete with helpful images of radiographic studies, patient appearance, or dynamic testing.
Assessment: This is a unique addition to the endocrine literature. The cases are replete with interesting twists and clinical pearls; it is an entertaining read for endocrinologists with the time to enjoy cases and learn from the discussions.
