Carolyn S. Vagts is a wife, mother, grandmother, quilt designer and the editor of Quilter's World. She also has a successful quilt shop in Lake Orion, Mich. Carolyn has made a name for herself in the quilting world with her award-winning techniques of mixing traditional piecing with fusible-art applique. Carolyn's designs have been published regularly in several magazines, including Quilter's World. She also lectures and teaches workshops to guilds. The creative process has been a notable part of her life. She studied drawing, pottery and sculpture in college and received a Liberal Arts degree. She finally found her niche in quilting as a fiber artist. She hopes to bring a fresh, new outlook to Quilter's World.

Materials

• 1 5/8 yards brown

• 2 1/3 yards cream

• 2 5/8 yards teal dot

• Batting to size

• Backing to size

• Thread

• Basic sewing tools and supplies


Cutting

From brown:

• Cut 5 (4½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 40 (4½") H squares.

• Cut 3 (2½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 40 (2½") I squares.

• Cut 8 (1½" by fabric width) J/K border strips.

From cream:

• Cut 2 (12½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 4 (12½") squares. Cut each square on both diagonals to make 16 D triangles.

Trim remaining strip to 8½" wide and cut 3 (8½") C squares.

• Cut 4 (8½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 13 (8½") C squares to make a total of 16 C squares.

Cut remaining strip into 2 (2½" x remaining length) strips and subcut 26 (2½") E squares.

•Cut 1 (6½" by fabric width) strip.

Subcut 2 (6½") squares. Cut each square on 1 diagonal to make 4 B triangles.

Trim remaining strip to 4½"-wide and subcut 6 (4½") A squares.

• Cut 2 (4½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 18 (4½") A squares to make a total of 24 A squares.

• Cut 1 (2½" by fabric width) strip.

Subcut 14 (2½") E squares to make a total of 40 (2½") E squares.

From teal dot:

• Cut 3 (8½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 48 (2½" x 8½") F rectangles.

• Cut 3 (4½" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut 48 (2½" x 4½") G rectangles.

•Cut 6 (4½" by fabric width) L/M border strips.

•Cut 8 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.


Completing the Blocks

1. Stitch G to opposite sides of A to make 24 A-G units (Figure 1); press.

2. Draw a diagonal stitching line on the wrong side of each I square.

3. Referring to Figure 2a, stitch an I triangle to the top right corner of the A-G unit along the diagonal stitching line drawn on I.

4. Trim seam allowance to ¼" (Figure 2b). Press I away from G. Repeat to make 24 A-G-I units (Figure 2c).

5. Stitch an F rectangle to opposite sides of an A-G-I unit referring to Block 2 diagram; press. Repeat to make eight of Block 2.

6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 on opposite end of remaining A-G-I units to add a second I triangle to the units, making 16 units as shown in Figure 3.

7. Stitch F rectangles to opposite sides of the A-G-I units referring to Block 1 diagram; press. Repeat to make 16 of Block 1.

8. Draw diagonal stitching lines on the wrong side of each E and H square.

9. Position and stitch two H squares to opposite corners of a C square along the drawn lines (Figure 4a). Trim seam allowances to ¼" (Figure 4b) and press H away from C. Repeat to make 15 C-H squares (Figure 4c).

10. Position and stitch E squares on H corners of C-H square along lines drawn on E (Figure 5a). Trim seam allowances to ¼" (Figure 5b) and press E away from H. Repeat to make 15 of Block 3 referring to block diagram.


Completing the Quilt

1. To make pieced setting triangle, position and stitch an H square to the corner of a D triangle (Figure 6a). Trim seam allowance to ¼" (Figure 6b) and press H away from D. Repeat to make 10 D-H triangles.

2. Repeat step 1 stitching E squares to the H corners of the D-H triangles referring to Figure 7a–c to make 10 pieced setting triangles.

3. Arrange the blocks, pieced setting triangles, and D and B triangles into nine diagonal rows referring to Figure 8. Stitch rows together individually. Stitch rows together as arranged.

4. Stitch J/K strips together on the short ends and press. Subcut into two each 1½" x 68¾" J and 1½" x 48" K border strips.

5. Stitch J borders to opposite sides of quilt center and press seams toward J. Stitch K borders to top and bottom of quilt center and press seams toward K.

6. Stitch L/M strips together on the short ends and press. Subcut into two each 4½" x 70¾" L and 4½" x 56" M border strips.

7. Stitch L borders to opposite sides of quilt center and press seams toward L. Stitch M borders to top and bottom of quilt center and press seams toward M.

6. Sandwich the batting between the pieced top and a prepared backing piece; baste layers together. Quilt as desired.

7. When quilting is complete, remove basting. Trim batting and backing fabric even with raw edges of the pieced top.

8. Prepare binding and stitch to quilt front edges, matching raw edges, mitering corners and overlapping ends. Fold binding to back side and stitch in place to finish.
