K-Gr 2—These brief and amply illustrated selections provide basic outlines of prominent Hispanic and Latino Americans for younger readers, and several of the volumes portray current figures. However, Chavez, a figure who is generously profiled elsewhere, may be considered an additional purchase, and the title on José Antonio Navarro, a 19th-century advocate for Tejano rights, is an unusual fit in the series. A time line runs along the bottom of pages, noting milestones in the subjects' lives. Sotomayor and Ochoa include photographs of their subjects as children, which could help establish connections with students. Olivas aptly and concisely characterizes his technological contribution to the space shuttle program. VERDICT Eye-catching introductions for lower elementary readers.
