What is noticeably absent in the scientific field is any mention of the art of its professions. The goal of this book is to celebrate the human artistic touch or art of the mental health profession.
By artistic touch, I mean taking some action outside of the standard professional interventions in order to pull together the skills of one's craft and the efforts of everyone involved in the treatment process. The results that may be achieved are often something special, extraordinary, and sometimes unique.
An inspiration for an artistic touch often emerges from the frustrations of feeling stuck. It occurs at those times when a clinician does not know how to get through an impasse that blocks the therapeutic process from moving forward towards achieving their patient's treatment goal, or how to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem!
I prefer to say that artistic touches come from everywhere, even from patients. The real challenge is to recognize an idea, comment, action or situation as an inspiration for an artistic touch.
Artistic touches are not precisely definable entities; rather, they reveal more about themselves within the context of a specific situation. Thus, the use of short stories can provide a much greater understanding and appreciation for artistic touches.
The short stories in this book are about these unusual and special moments in a patient's therapeutic intervention process. Every story is followed by my thoughts on what was significant about that story. I chose to separate each story from my analyses, so the readers, who prefer, may experience each story and infer its significance for themselves.
Either way that you choose to read these stories, their primary purposes are to celebrate the art within therapeutic interventions and to inspire the reader to take time to recall, within their own life, those special moments of risk. When inspiration, creativity, or luck enabled you to pull together, numerous forces or experiences that led to something special, even extraordinary.
Your memories of these moments will be like enjoying a work of art in which you become enthralled in the moment that was masterfully captured by the painter, sculpture, or musician! Hopefully, your memories will even motivate you to find the courage to carry out an artistic touch, when one of these moments of inspiration arrives in your future!
Take some time to share your artistic touches with family and friends. Your memories may be brief, but such artistic touches are life-fulfilling and profoundly meaningful to you. For they celebrate the amazingly wonderful human quality that gives meaning to our life, as well as to others! Your artistic touches are far too precious, just to be forgotten or left untold!
