This monograph by expert authors covers the important topic of catheter-related infections. There has been a commitment to high quality writing throughout. The individual chapter quality is very consistent and there is more than adequate educational redundancy. Several authors offer new clinical concepts of prevention. The purpose is to provide contemporary information about the diagnosis, major complications, and management of catheter-related infections. The book will be useful for hospital intensivists and infectious disease subspecialists. Pediatricians, nutritionists, hyperalimentation and intravenous therapy practitioners, nephrologists, neurosurgeons, and perhaps biomechanical engineers will find portions of the book useful. The mortality, morbidity, and increased costs from these infections have not been solved and while this monograph does indeed pose some promise, reading it makes clear that a reduction of the clinical problems caused by this technology will probably not occur in the near future. The only minor quibble I have is the hope that some of the nomenclature in this subdiscipline of infectious disease will improve. I wish I had a dime for every time ""slime"" is used in the text and I cringe at the formation of new words such as ""hydrophobocity."" This book is an excellent technological and clinical source for all clinicians interested in this timely topic, especially infectious disease consultants and critical care specialists.
