About the Author

Professor Liu is noted for his interest in OOKP (osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis) surgery, a revolutionary form of artificial corneal implant for patients with end-stage corneal blindness. He has established a centre of excellence for OOKP surgery at The Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton, serving the UK and beyond, where he leads a multi-disciplinary team. He has travelled extensively to raise awareness for and teach OOKP surgery, in addition to Visiting Professorships around the globe, e.g. at Kinki University Medical School in Osaka, Japan and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India. He received the Spanish ‘Member of Merit’ award from the Barraquer Institute in Barcelona and is a visiting Senior Consultant to the Singapore National Eye Centre.

An experienced laser and lens refractive surgeon, Professor Liu uses both LASIK and surface treatment procedures (such as PRK). He was President of the British Society for Refractive Surgery (BSRS) from 2005 to 2008 and was President of the Medical Contact Lens & Ocular Surface Association from 1998 to 2000. He also specializes in the treatment of corneal and external eye disease, and in caring for patients with glaucoma.

Ahmed Shalaby Bardan is a Lecturer at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alexandria, Egypt, and an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Brighton, UK. He is also a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Northampton General Hospital, UK, specialising in cornea, external eye diseases and cataracts.

Following basic and higher specialty training at Alexandria University hospitals, he completed a 2-year fellowship in corneal and anterior segment diseases at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, UK. He has contributed to national and international courses and workshops on cataract surgery, immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery, delivery of cataract services, and lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty techniques. He has extensive experience in the management of complex and challenging cataract cases, and in laser and lens refractive surgery.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

There is no shortage of textbooks on cataract surgery. However, ophthalmologists will find Cataract Surgery – Pearls and Techniques provides a very different and fresh perspective on our most common ophthalmic procedure. Professor Christopher Liu is an internationally recognized expert in cataract and anterior segment surgery. Over his long and prolific career, Christopher has distinguished himself as a clinician, researcher, innovator, and teacher. Dr. Liu is the president-elect of the Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society, and he has been active in the leadership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the British Society for Refractive Surgery. Professor Liu has also provided valued mentorship to many clinical fellows, including his co-editor, Dr. Ahmed Shalaby Bardan, a rising star among anterior segment surgeons. Together, these two editors have produced a thoughtful and creative guide to cataract surgery that extends well beyond the transfer of basic and advanced surgical skills.

Cataract Surgery – Pearls and Techniques provides a uniquely holistic approach to the procedure, by exploring topics such as patient safety, surgical timing, anaesthesia options, risk assessment, surgical workflow and efficiency, and carbon footprint and sustainability. This textbook also strives to more deliberately consider the cataract patient’s perspective. How can we best understand and address our patients’ fears and expectations, optimize their comfort, and improve their overall experience? Finally, exploring the best ways to learn cataract surgery impacts on how we can individually improve, as well as how we should be training the next generation of cataract surgeons. The editors have selected an outstanding faculty of international experts to write about each of these subjects. Many of these authors are past fellows and colleagues of Professor Liu. Like symphony conductors, the editors orchestrate these components into a comprehensive and purposeful roadmap for cataract surgeons.

Overall, this insightful textbook captures the essence and the many benefits of doing a surgical fellowship with a leading mentor. Clinical fellows not only learn surgical tips and pearls, but get to observe how the expert counsels and communicates with patients, how they organize their operating room schedule and workflow, and how they make decisions such as when to operate, what refractive IOL to use, and how to assess surgical risk. Cataract Surgery – Pearls and Techniques is a thought provoking and practical resource for both novice and advanced cataract surgeons alike. Most importantly, it will help us to become not only better surgical technicians, but also better physicians.
