About the Author

Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego and Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of the market leading textbook Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, as well as more than 500 other articles and chapters. Dr Stahl is an internationally recognized clinician, researcher and teacher in psychiatry and psychopharmacology.

Thomas L. Schwartz is Professor and Vice Chair of Psychiatry and Director of Medical Student Psychiatric Training at State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He is an author of Depression: Treatment Strategies and Management, 2nd edition and Integrating Psychotherapy and Psychopharmacology: A Handbook for Clinicians. He teaches nationally and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Description: This is a collection of 30 distinct psychiatric cases designed educate readers and provoke them to think about potential treatment options. The previous volume was published in 2011.
Purpose: The authors strive to "reassure, inform, and guide" readers toward "better clinical decision making" in a "user-friendly presentation." Given the complexity of psychopathology, this book is needed.
Audience: The authors identify the target audience as "prescribers specializing in psychiatry." They indicate that any healthcare providers interested in psychopharmacology could benefit from this book, but due to the complexity of the cases, the identified audience is best positioned to benefit.
Features: The 30 cases or chapters can be read in any order. They begin by identifying the case, the question raised, and the dilemma that occurs in treatment. The cases generally start with an overview of the patient's current issues and relevant history, then follow up with treatment strategies and the adjustments needed secondarily to respond to complications that arise. At the conclusion of the case, the authors discuss particular issues that arose from the case. Chapters end with references and a helpful index concludes the book. Illustrations appear throughout the book, and CME credits are available via a posttest online.
Assessment: I have used many books from the Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology series and appreciate the way they present complicated topics in understandable ways. This one is no different, and it covers many complicated cases that I was able to identify in my clinical practice. Because of the diversity of psychopathology, I would recommend other volumes that cover additional topics. The only suggestions I have for improvement are related to presentation: multiple abbreviations are used, which can be confusing and it would be helpful to better link the references to the preceding subject if a reader wishes to learn more about a specific topic.
