About the Author

Janet Treadwell, RN, MSN, CCM, CPHQ, PhD, is Director of Provider and Care Coordination for Texas Children’s Health Plan. Janet has been a registered nurse for over 30 years, and involved in managed care for the past 20 years. Ms. Treadwell’s nursing focus is on preventive health and population management. She supports provider relations, case management, and utilization programming for a health plan of over 270,000 ordinarily pediatric members. Janet holds a Master’s in Community Health and a Doctorate in Business, and has taught case management at the college level.

Purpose: As part of the Springer Briefs in Public Health, this book sets out to provide a concise summary of research and practice applications in this area to support optimal outcomes. The objectives are only partially met, however, because further discussion of the social determinants of health and life course is lacking.
Audience: The intended audience is practitioners in the field. The book would be appropriate for case managers and care coordinators, particularly those new to this field. The authors appear to be credible, but little information is provided about them.
Features: The book includes overviews of case management and care coordination, from the perspective of essential skills, implications for policy and practice, and future directions, for supporting children and families, particularly children/youth with special healthcare needs and families at risk (e.g., maternal, infant, and early childhood home visiting). The book describes key elements of these programs, as well as tips for providers, resources, and emerging technologies. Because social determinants of health and life course are emerging topics in this area, a chapter highlighting these trends would have been helpful.
Assessment: This would be a useful resource for new professionals in this field as well as a helpful update for those already in practice.
